Always listen to Steve.
Steve Gibson wrote: Again: EVERYONE using Windows XP, who has not already installed the huge (30 to 140 megabyte) Service Pack 1, is presently at risk of having many files maliciously deleted from their systems. PLEASE SPREAD THE NEWS of this critical Windows XP vulnerability — and this quick and simple solution — to everyone whom you know to be using Windows XP. If you or they have already installed Windows XP Service Pack 1, the problem has already been cured.

Otherwise, this small, quick, and free utility will handle the job easily.

Thank you.

The security hole is through the XP version of MS Help. Evidently they left this one wide open. All calls to the help commands weren't even checked before executed reguardless of where the command came from, even over the internet. This is the biggest mistake I've seen MS make in a long time. Makes me glad I refused to switch to XP. Windows 2000 for me.

Is it just me, or does putting the words "Microsoft" and "security" in the same sentence produce an oxymoron? :-?

You don't need the service pack! Just search your hard drive for a file called "upldrvinfo.htm" (I think thats what its called) and rename it or delete it. Problem solved.

It should be located here:
\windows\PCHEALTH\HELPCTR\upldrvinfo.htm

Yes however if you ever need to use the online MS help then it won't work... not to mention the other security and stability issues that SP1 addresses. If you have XP I would definately suggest installing the service pack, it will be worth your time. I've seen the extensive list of problems it fixes.

Yeah, but some people can't download/install SP1 because microsoft won't let them.
