ne1 know of a good email server for linux (tarball perfered) that supports pop3?

Sendmail is the most common. Actually, I think it's the most common mail server on the net. I could be wrong about that though.
As a warning, be very, very careful about securing it. I would suggest googling for some sendmail security howtos or something. Sendmail is one of the most commonly exploited programs in existence. Personally, if I were to run a mail server I would probably pick something else just to avoid the security risk sendmail is. Unfortunately I don't know any good alternatives off the top of my head.
