Free 3D modeling software is rather hard to come by. Older versions of Strata 3D were free; if you have a Mac, Mechanisto is also a decent free 3D program.

This seems promising, but I have yet to try it.

If anyone has ever heard of this, tell me what you think.

Alias|wavefront is now giving away a free version of their industry-standard 3D development software, Maya. The "Personal Learning Edition" is completely free and basically fully-featured, but it is for practice only. All of the output it produces is watermarked -- and there is absolutely no way to transfer work done in the learning edition to any commercial software (or version of Maya), to produce final output. Everything you do in this version should definitely be considered "practice".

It's probably not what you're looking for -- I wouldn't consider it an easy piece of software to learn (though there are a lot of books and docs/tutorials available, it's just a beast)..

But, if you happen to be an up-and-coming 3D artist.. it's a pretty amazing deal (retail: 2-6k$).

You forgot to mention GIMP ! :D

It's free as well, but not really for 3D modeling or rendering... it's just your basic paint program / image editor.

I hear it's the closest you can get to a good image editor before you have to start paying...

You could always download one that you're supposed to buy. I downloaded Lightwave 7. Great program, I've seen prototypes of cars and such made with this program. Or do we frown upon this type of behavior here at Big-O?

It doesn't much matter. Without the packaged manuals, Lightwave is nearly impossible to understand.
