Error 31 (Windows 2000)
My friend's dad is having trouble dialing his Internet connection. He's using Windows 2000. When I tried to dial in (I was diagnosing the problem), I got this error:
99% of the time that means the modem is not responding. Go into your device manager (system properties > Hardware tab > Device manager) then find the modem and go into its properties. Try querying the modem and see if it responds. Restarting normally fixes this problem. If worse comes to worse reinstalling it should do the trick. If the modem was shot then it probably wouldn't even be recognized.
damn, i prolly would have been more help if i left my modem in my comp...
this happened once to a customers comp @ work, but i dont think its the same prob as u
their dhcp was being gay and wouldnt work. in ipconfig, it said "dhcp enabled..... no"
so i went in the registry and forced it 2 b enabled, but when i tried to reconnect, it gave me that same err u have. not shure, just search in ur registry for "EnableDHCP" and if u c ne data w/ "0" (decimal), replace it w/ a 1 and if nothing changed, put it bak how it use 2 b
i highly dought this is ur prob but its worth a try?

u know that i was referring to the dhcp client, not the server, right?

Yes. This is such old news, everything in this topic. I've diagnosed the problem. It doesn't work with any modem on any phone line at the guy's house. I can't dial in with my personal account from my own house from my own laptop -- and this connection worked two weeks ago. One of the guys told me at work that we have a bunch of dead modems in the model pool for that phone line. That is almost definitely the issue.Robpol86 wrote:u know that i was referring to the dhcp client, not the server, right?
