The RIAA is the Recording Industry Association of America, a separate entity from the United States government. As the name suggests, the RIAA is an association of various recording labels. They have nothing to do with the government, aside from the fact that the the Justice Dept. (or parts of it) are, naturally, helping in the investigations.

(like michael says above) the riaa (recording industry association of america) isn't part of the government, just a bunch of big label music recording companies together. also, they have their own ip addresses that they use over kazaa and other p2p networks, when you download from them, they can somehow screw up your computer or get info about you. kazaa lite kpp has the ip addresses of the riaa and filters them out so then you won't download from them. i don't know how it works, but i guess it blocks the riaa.

Nahh, you're safe from the RIAA on that one, but you aren't safe from any other organizations that decide to step in eventually. The RIAA (I say re-uh), is only for music labels and artists.

RIAA=Recording Industry Association of America (labels pay them to fight their battles)

MPAA=Motion Picture Association of America (not sure how you get to be a part of this one, but they're taking some idiotic steps to see who leaks movies)

I'm sure software vendors won't ever step in officially, they'll just make it tougher to pirate software. Personally I'm thinking they might, at some point, create dummy software (for large releases) with a keygen that appears to work, but is the/a fake algorithm. Don't know what they would do to let the user know, but maybe it will contact an outside source and report your IP...or maybe something as simple as letting the software run all out for a little while then pop something up saying
"You have downloaded and installed this software illegally, we created this blah blah blah...gonna catch you blah blah blah...get scared of us and never do it again...blah"

The MPAA is starting to take some light steps, I'm sure it will escalate slowly though until they can identify the main culprits for leaked screeners of movies.

TV shows...well, I honestly can't say about that one just yet. I haven't brushed up on the legal shmegal of that in a while, but I know that recording most shows off of tv for private personal use is legal, don't know about sharing. Sharing sporting events is illegal though, I know that much, so no downloading. Sharing movies from tv I am unsure of, but you can record it off of tv for personal use.

M$, IBM, Apple, Sun Microsystems, etc.

As for leaked screener movies.. those ones in DVD Quality (Which i happen to have a few of). They're leaked by the people who work at the printing press, the distributors, and so forth.
All it takes is for one person to snag a copy of LOTR:TTT - 2 months beforehand while its still being manufactured and burned for retail sales..
Once that person has a copy, all they have to do is upload it to the net, and tell the world about it. (NFONEWS, PacketNews, etc.)

Grrr... I'm sure it's wrong... But I watched it... I even tapped it... But I want it on my computer... The quality (in some cases) is very much not there so it better be okay.

I can't remember the exact details but I'm pretty sure the distribution of Television Programs isn't illegal. The TV Stations don't like it, but it isn't illegal.

Back when the mini-dishes were allowing you to watch the 3 networks on all three time zones (Eastern, Central, and Pacific), the local affiliates were getting pissed because they were getting denied advertising revenue. If I, who live in Texas, watched a television station out of NC, the NC affiliate gets the ad dollars from my viewing habits. This in a sense, pisses off the local Texas affiliate.

I don't think it's illegal until you start distributing copies of movies that were copied off of TV or professional sports broadcasts (as you know they have that stupid statement about rebroadcasting without explicit consent from the National Football League)
