Yeah, I would do the same thing, but my computer is so old it only has a 13gig hd in it, so there's really no point in partitioning it. The only time I partition it is when I format - just move all my music and important stuff to a partition and reinstall Windows on the other.Robpol86 wrote:i do, i use the set-it-and-forget-it thing on all of my partitions except my d/l partition
Well we see you are not a real computer enthusiast...punkster103 wrote:That's what it recommends. Besides, you can schedule it to do it at certain times, like midnight or something when you're not on and don't really care.Michael wrote:Everyday?! That's a bit overkill, don't you think?

Not if you have the correct settings. Mine draws almost no power after 2 hrs.gururalph wrote:1. Tremendous waste of energy. Just imagine how much energy would be saved every year globally if everyone who left their machines running started shutting them off at the end of the day.
Oh goodie. Between the surge protection $100,000 pay out (I think its that much) it would only be possible to end up with a better computer.2. Risk of frying your components during a power surge, blackout or electrical storm. Your machine is way more likely to be damaged if it is on during these events than if it is off. Of course, a direct hit by lightning can fry almost anything in your house, even if it is not powered up.
Not on stupid 9x. I would shoot myself for that. I love my 2000 computer.3. Performance! If you always leave your machine running, and you have Windows 95/98/ME, check your system resources. If you are not at 85%-95%, you are not running at peak performance. (You may also have way too many programs running in the background) Restart the computer and see how your system resources increase. We all know how a restart can solve so many problems that Windows can develop while running.
By the time my computer dies because of something like that (which I have never had to deal with) I will need a new computer anyways.4. Wear & Tear. Every moving component in your machine has a limited life. Fans, power supplies and hard drives will eventually wear out. Why shorten their life by thousands of hours by leaving them on all the time? The theory that components are damaged more by turning them on and off then by leaving them on might have been true many years ago, in the early days of the printed circuit board. But it doesn't don't really hold up today. Compare your computer to other electronic devices in your life. Do you leave any of them running all the time? Is your TV's life shortened by turning it on and off? Your stereo? I have a Sony Trinitron color TV made in the early 80's that has been turned on and off a few times a day since I bought it. It still works perfectly!
