Problem installing phpbb2 on a website...
I read a tutorial on installing phpbb2 and I got upto the part where it asks me to open the index.php on a web browser so I can configure/install it. But when I enter the address I get a 404 error.
Im using tripod.lycos.co.uk and I activated php4u/mysql

As most of us (notice I don't say all) aren't experts at the phpBB system, I think your best bet is to talk on the fourms at phpBB which can be found here: www.phpBB.com/phpBB
Personally, I don't know all there is to know about the errors and stuff. If you would want my help, I could try to help you out, but I would prolly need you to give a screenshot or two...because I am a visual person

Plasma...i dont think thats completely true. When I was testing a site I made on tripod, I got a 404 error even though the file was there. The problem was that I didn't set the permissions right for that file to get viewed. Like I had to chmod it to readable by everyone and then change it later (if that makes any sense.)
Immortal...I'm not going to lock this thread because I wanted to know what the problem was and how you fixed it so that if someone else has a problem like you had, I can refer to this thread.

well.... then that should not give a 404 error..... that should give a 403 error.KooLTaB101 wrote:....... I got a 404 error even though the file was there. The problem was that I didn't set the permissions right for that file to get viewed.......
403;1 = "Forbiddened - execution access forbidend"
403;2 = "Forbiddened - READ access forbiddened"
403;3 = "Forbiddened - write access forbidened"
404 on the other hadn is simply "File Not Found".... all the time.

I'm using lycos.co.uk for my friend's forums, and there's a lot of downtime and lag on their servers. Just a thought.

You can goto http://freewebspace.net and use their comparison charts to find php providers. Although I think most of them are 'pay-for' services..it's worth a shot.
