Another P2P program: Direct Connect

Post by fuuucckkers »

For those who don't know, there is a very good Peer 2 Peer program called Direct Connect. (Thanks DADINK for pointing me to a new thread)

Anyways, you can get it here, at: http://neo-modus.com

The way DC works is much different than other P2P programs such as KaZaA, or Morpheous. The way this works, is you open it up, and I think if it's your first time using it, you are presented with the Settings Menu. You must enter your username, File descriptions of general stuff you share, and an email address are both optional.

The next Settings Tab is the File Transfers. Choose a directory where you want stuff to download. And the next box down is the folders you're going to share. Add items and add as much as you like. The more you share the better. DC rules are very strict and set by the hub owners. (What's a hub? Just a room where people gather to trade, DC has hundreds of hubs.) Hub rules can very hub to hub, from the minimun share amount, to the files you share. Most hub owners are nice, and will let you in if you share over an average of at least a few GB worth of stuff.

Be Warned, if you share CRAP such as your WINDOWS folder, or Program Files folders.. you will most likely get kicked and/or banned from most hubs. Only share quailty files. That's what DC is all about.

How do you access the hubs??
See the menu at the top where the settings button is?? Look to the left of that and press the CONNECT button. Then you will be presented with another menu. Press the PUBLIC folder looking button.
All that nonsense looking stuff is the Public Hub list. Look for one that interests you. ISO hubs, games, warez, mp3, pr0n, apps and so on.

Most are also catagorized by world locations as well.
(There seems to be a lot of European countries that use DC.)
Open up one of those hubs, and if you meet the minimum share requirement for that hub, which should be stated in the Hub Description in the Public Hub list. If you don't meet the Min Share, you'll either get redirected or kicked from the hub.

When you finally get to a hub, you'll see a list of users on the right side, a file description of what they're sharing and so on. Double click on a user and it will download their File List. If a user is passive, and you are also set to Passive you will not be able to view anything of that person in the hub. This might be a good time to mention as well, if you're behind a router/firewall .. you might want to try setting your Prefs to Passive if you aren't getting any results or response at all from DC.

Once you are looking at someones files, just double click on single files to download.. or you can highlight folders on the right side, and click the download button at the top of the window, to DL everything in the folder.

------------------------
I think that about sums everything up. If you have any questions at all, post them here, and I will try to answer them, or if anyone else can as well..feel free.

And if you want to read the FAQ, which is highly recommended if you've never used DC before, go here: http://www.neo-modus.com/?page=Help

Hope this helps!! :D :P

I've had this for a year, and I hate it.
No one has any files I want
But time flows like a river...

Hahahahaha. Are you crazy?!?!

Obviously you've never used it much then. What kind of stuff are you looking for and I'll tell you the hub where you can find it.
Seriously.

One thing I never really liked about Direct Connect is that most of the publically listed hubs in the program have ridiculously high share requirements for you to enter. If I'm looking for something or just want to browse, I don't feel like I should have to share out 100 gigs of porn to simply enter a hub.

I dont have 100gigs.. More like 3gigs  heheh

Anyways, there are plenty of hubs that have very low minimum shares. Even lots of hubs that dont have a minumum. There are over 200 hubs in total. It just takes time and patience to look.

I've found Direct Connect to be most useful when I'm looking for something specific (an episode of an old tv show, for example) and there is a hub dedicated to that specific subject. They're usually cool with you not having tons of gigs and just want to share what they have.

It's also good for finding ISO's of games and programs.
My main use for it is to get my Full Albums count up.
Currently I have 195 Full Albums. Each album is downloaded, each song verified with either the CDDB, AMG or Amazon. Then I use various programs to rename, and tag the files specifically.
Artist - Track # - Album - Song Title
I also get the Album cover image in either .jpg or .gif from Amazon ..and add the playlist of each album all to the same directory. playlist files go in .PLS format .. using Winamp. :)

For tagging I use ID3 v1, but if the track/album names are too long I use ID3 v2.

Wasted has pr0n? :o

I share about 35Gb of movies and music on Kazaa....kinda makes me wonder why my 80Gb hard drive only has about 30Gb left on it.. :-?

When I have the time one day I'm gonna look through the hubs on Direct Connect to see what I can find. Right now I've been searching for episodes of Fraggle Rock. 8)

Another good place to find ISO's and Full Albums is IRC. And you can use hkSFV to verify the integrity of your downloads :).

If you're looking for something specifically.. try using GloSearch.

It searches all the hubs, and then brings you the results.
The current version is a little buggy though. If you let it run too long it eats up resources, give you an error, then crashes.

Damn new version only cause the previous version..the creator deleted his source code. Now we're stuck with this newer buggy one. Oh well. :-?

http://glosearch.tk/

Heed the warning !!
Please note that some hubowners ban glosearch users' IP number. Complaints to them, not me.

I dont trust IRC.. I've heard of too many worms and viruses coming from there.

And I could use hkSFV, but honestly.. I've never really used it before. The only time I actually needed a tool like yours here.. is when I downloaded Mandrake Linux 9 off their FTP. I had to compare my MD5 checksums with the ones provided serverside. I found a really good program for that called MD5 Summer. But maybe I will give yours a chance.. considering I do have it installed.

I do not keep much on my computer at one time (yes I know I should share but HD space it not as adbundes as yours. I will download a few cds worth of stuff and burn it and then delet it off my computer. It saves a lot of HD space plus I can move it from computer to computer wiht easa

dc kix ass. i always used it. from tv eps, to games. i think its the best prog to find missing files (like dlls) when lamers share windows folders. I dont mind the high share requirements. i use 2 go to Nordic Domain but that hub died. I share 80 gigs. I would share 200 but i dont have ne bandwidth @ my house. I have like 15 kB/s upload here. sadly. if u have a router/firewall, just set sum open ports and u can use active mode.
