Okay I was using my Mod powers... and it's not funny how many of you have constant IPs... The Mods/Admins can look at my posts and figure out how bad my ISP is about giving me a fairly static IP...

RR hasn't givin me a new IP for months and they say it is "dynamic"

I know... My ISP is Road Runner... Yet I have about 10 IPs I have posted from. I then look at some other RR customers and they have like 1 + some other ISP they have posted from once.

My IP has been the same ever since I got bradband. And yes, it's supposed to be dynamic. I think now since my router is always powered on it prevents the IP from changing.

IPs expire after a certain amount of time, which eliminates the router theory.

Wrong, half way through the lease period the router (or whatever the host with the dynamic IP is) will renew its IP address. Your IP address will only change if you disconnect long enough for the lease to expire and the IP to be given to a different host, the IP address is removed from the address pool, or your computer is forceably disconnected from the server. I know I explained that in these forums somewhere.

Dynamic IP doesn't retain the same connotation often used when referring to a dial-up line. Dynamic in the sense that it can/might change. I have only had maybe 3 IP addresses with my DSL and each of these changes occurred when my system was down for heavy hardware maintenance.

mine changes everytime i disconnect/get booted..... makes it kinda hard to run a server when its like that

but yeah...... i have a thing that updates the dns nameservers every 60 seconds on my account...... so its cool

I have a router and my IP changes about every 30 minutes

My ISP (Verizon DSL) told me my IP should change every 20-45 minutes, I have a router which didn't seemed to affect it...And its on 24/7

They probably have customized or self-written versions of DHCP on their servers that give you a new IP address every time you renew. That is totally against the RFC's governing DHCP.

If I remember correctly from when I built a DHCP server at an old job, the admin can set up any amount of time for the IP lease that they want. What is the RFC you are referring to? Is there some kind of rule that must be adhered to when it comes to IP leasing?
