is there any way to program hotkeys yourself for windows? like how ctrl alt del brings up a window, can i program keys to do something i want?

If you right click a shortcut icon and choose properties, in the "Shortcut key" box you can press the combination of buttons you would like to use to run the program. CTRL + ALT + A has opened Winamp for me for years :).

what i was getting at was assigning the 'show desktop' icon in the quicklaunch some keys to activate but that doesnt seem to work, any ideas?

well, i dont know about that way specifically, but you can always do the same thing ur wanting by pressing the Windows key + D

that will show desktop

Press Alt+SpaceBar+M lots of times til you minimize all your windows.

Not for key combinations that include the windows key. Ctrl+Esc+D is not show desktop.
