History & window clearing

I really hate when after a certain amount of message text has been sent, a window pops up that says "this window will have to be cleared in order to keep an accurate history...". I reallize that I can still view the stuff that was cleared in the history viewer, but it's really annoying when this happens in the middle of a conversation. Could you avoid clearing the window? Why was it necessary in the first place, btw?
