'Messenger Service' Spam
This article will help anyone running NT/2000/XP who is affected by this:

Excellent article, Mark.
That actually gave me an idea on a new way to alert users of a database application I have written that they need to get out of the datbase. Currently, a message box pops up but it is within the application (MS Access) so if it's minimized they won't see it. Since the app already returns the IP addresses of everyone logged in (So we can id them and tell them to get out when messages are ignored) we can now just 'Net Send' them a message which will pop-up on top of all their open windows. This, I hope, would be classified as an ethical use of the service as outlined by the article.

I'm really glad you posted that message Mark. Yesterday, I borrowed my friends DSL modem and within 10 minuets, I received a net-send popup advertisement. I remember in college doing a net send to the entire campus and getting in big trouble, it was only a matter of time before spammers added it to their arsenal of annoyance. Fortunately, it’s very easy to turn the messenger service off, and that’s just what I did! Thanks!

t0ne..... no... i DID do it.... and no you dont need an ip address (unless you wanna netsend only PART of your network)
if you notice, i used an asterix in the thing above....
net send * yo
that sends the "yo" to every client in the network.
if you wanted to send to parts of your network, like one room, just find the local workgroup name or sumthin... i dont know how your school is set up, but yeah.....
and you can also do partial ip's like so:
net send 10.0.0.* yo

No, there's no way to trace. That's why they never caught the various people (like the confessed "net send spammers" in this thread) that sent messages using net send.whosurdaddy wrote:sounds like a fun thing to do ....is there a way they can trace it to the computer that the net send originated from?
