Branded AIM

Post by Anthony »

What do you think of a branded version of AIM? I know that Road Runner and Earthlink do this, and other companies do it that I am not currently aware of. As far as I know the ad is simply replaced by the company's "logo" (does it change?). I downloaded the RR version expecting something to be diffrent but nothing was so I uninstalled it after about 1 min. Another thing is (at least the RR version) is outdated 4.8.x (I would show you where you can get the RR version but the site is either semi down or just wont let me in as I am not at home (on my RR).

I think they are allowed to "brand" the versions of AIM because they are either owned or partered by AOL-Time Warner. As we all know, RoadRunner is the ISP for Time Warner's cable network. I also know that one of the dial-up options that Time Warner offers their customers is Earthlink. I don't know what AOL expects from someone to get permission to created a "Branded" version of their AIM client.

I belive I read somewhere (CNN.com) today that Juno does this also. So inless some how Juno was/is a partner of AOL that would kinda throw that idea out the door. Maybe you must pay some sort of percent of money based on the clicks from the ads. Also maybe it is cheaper if you are a partner company. Of course AOL owns Road Runner (AOL-Time Warner... Time Warner owns Road Runner, for you people not around Time Warner cable).

Yeah, I thought that the RoadRunner would be different, maybe some of the AOL features, but it was just AIM that was outdated.

RR Messenger FAQ wrote: Q: Why can't I send an instant message to an RR Messenger subscriber who is displayed in my Buddy List? When I try to do this, I receive a message that the person is not online.

A: RR Messenger subscribers have a feature that let's them block all incoming instant messages but still be seen in Buddy Lists. It is possible that the RR Messenger subscriber has blocked all instant messages or blocked all instant messages from you.
could this be that feature we've all wanted, but could never figure out how to get it to work?

Apparently RR feels its subscribers should get something no one else does... RR is owned by AOL-Time Warner after all :-?

Well I know that I could do it on AOL 7.0 but I could take it one step farther. I could block everyone from see me on line but I could see if who was online from my buddy list. It was a nice feature to have if I did not want to be bother or have anyone know I was on line.

it IS possible to make a simnple prog do this...... ive noticed it in one of the 'punter' programs that was pretty recent.

(by the way, on a side note, AIM finally patched tha hole (january 03') that let people punt users...... so no more punting as of right now)

the program had to sign your sn on, of course, but it somehow had the same feature of making it seem like you were available but when sum1 sent you an IM it said you wernt.... you could send messages from it also

so, yeah...... it IS possible to make something that will do this for ya
