MSConfig is long gone

Post by Plasma2002b »

Ok.... im sure yall know about how MsConfig was used on the Windows 95, 98, and ME OS's...... and how its not part of NT, XP, or 2k.....

so heres the question......

whats the easiest way to manage all the stuff that starts up with your computer? I know back in msconfig, you had the option tabs of what started up in 3 different ways.....

here on sum1's XP machine, he got a program installed (it was a virus, but thats not the issue as of right now) and we need to make it stop from trying to be loaded at every windows login.

Its probably in the registry somewhere, but ive never had to edit anything that has to do with bootup programs (still dont, lol.... just him)

So... anyone know where that is?

Plasma,

I don't know if you've heard of JV16 PowerTools. I came across it a couple years ago from TechTV. The guy, Jouni Vuorio, that develops it lives in Europe and is doing this great app (my opinion) for free. It can be obtained from http://www.jv16.org.

One of the things it has on it's registry cleaning functionality is an ability to see what is running at startup and to choose to remove it.

hmm... Plasma...
i could have a messed up system, but im definatly running win xp pro, and i have access to the system configuration utility. i actually use it quite often to modify what processes and programs start when windows starts. Still works from start -> run -> msconfig. i actually didnt have it when i was on my win 95 machine, but do now.

I think the reason you did not have it on your Win 95 machine is because it is on no Win 95 machine with out getting it from some place other then Microsoft.

After you install SP1, msconfig gets deleted (as well as a bunch of other stuff). If you choose to archive it files from before SP1, you can still find it by searching for it. Otherwise, search online if you want to get it.

I still use msconfig...as well as XSetup when I need to config something.

I just use the registry to change startup options. For a list off all the programs set to run on boot edit:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

http://www.google.com/search?q=msconfig ... 8&oe=utf-8

That'll give you msconfig.exe for Win2k or whatever you need.
