Sega hopes to reduce costs by partnering with the world's largest manufacturer of pachinko machines.
In a surprising announcement, Sega, the world's largest developer of arcade games, and Sammy, the world's largest manufacturer of pachinko machines, have revealed plans to merge on October 1 of this year. Sammy president Hajime Satomi will lead the new company, which will be valued at approximately $3.1 billion. Sega recently announced that it would be cutting its profit forecast for 2002-2003 by 90 percent, while Sammy's sales have tripled over the last three years. The added financial stability provided by Sammy will help Sega focus more on its arcade business and general software development. Details of the merger have yet to be finalized, so it's not currently known if the companies will be kept somewhat separate or if it will be an outright merger.
We'll post more details as they become available.

The two companies have decided to abandon their plans for a merger.
According to the Nihon Keizai Shimbun, Sammy and Sega have decided not to pursue their plans for a merger. The two companies failed to agree on a stock merger ration as well as several other details. Sammy and Sega will hold board meetings this week to officially make a decision about the merger and then make a formal announcement at a later date. The merger offer from Namco is still currently being considered by Sega, though Namco gave Sega a May 9 deadline to decide.
We'll post more as it becomes available.

Yeah.. I read that on Slashdot, but I forgot to post the update. Thanks dude!
Also.. not included with the Gamespot article..is that a few companies are looking to merge ..or otherwise 'buyout' Sega.
Those include Microsoft, Namco, and Electronic Arts.
I myself would prefer either 2 of the ladder..
If Microsoft buys out Sega... all is doomed for any game to be released on cross platforms.
