Maximum MB for History

Post by Big-O Mark »

It may be a good idea to add an option for a user defined maximum space used for history logging.

I'm sure some users just view the .html history files from Explorer rather than the AIM+ History Viewer. If you're not using the viewer, you may have no idea how many MB you're piling up :).

perhaps once the viewer has some management capabilities, such as delete. Then, when the users history gets to be a set limit, warn the user that the history is nearing the limit and some housekeeping should be done. Just an idea.

maybe an option to archive the older messages into a compressed file?
oh, how about compressing the archives into compressed files (instead of folders like they are now) and letting the user transparently view logs through the viewer? (so the files will be in zip format or something, but the viewer can still open them up and read them without external programs)

We're hoping to have all the history files compressed (probably .ZIP), yet still viewable in a future release. This would definitely cut down on the space that the logs are occupying, as well as allowing more privacy in teh form of password protection.

Even with an addition like that, I still think an optional user definied max space for history is a good idea. I'm sure people out there could still chat up 100MB of logs in no time :).

repost

Archiving and Deleting old history, a feature as simple as
"Consider history file old after _ days (0 to make them never old)"
would be nice, and or
"Consider history file old after _ days of not being viewed (0 to make them never old)"
then
"Hide old history files"
and for space saving perposes,
"Delete old history after it has been archived for more than _ days"
if it is at all possible, try to make the files smaller after the limit of the archive date, (compile them together making it longer to load to read but easier to store)

Marky told me to repost this stuff here (i overlooked it before) so here it is, and yeah i agree with the ZIP archiving thing, but still keep the Viewer but dont view archived stuff in the viewer (see the features above for reasons why) just have a
"Retreive Archived History for User/Day"
type thing or something like that

If you're going to implement all these options, there should be a few more:
[ ] = check box
(o) = radio button...
______________________________________________________
[ ] Don't keep logs from chatrooms
[ ] Ask before logging messages that aren't from buddies

(o) Log all IM's
(o) Log all IM's except those from the following users
(o) Only log IM's if they are from the following users
--------------------------------------------------------------
[list box with usernames to be included in/excluded from logging]
[Add user button] [Remove user button]
______________________________________________________

I personally don't want to log chatrooms and I manually delete those. If I get a message from someone who isn't on my buddy list, I usually don't even want to read it, let alone log it in the history. The last part is pretty much self-explanatory.
