Site avatar upload not working

Over at my site.. the forum avatar uploader isn't working. It's telling me -- "The avatar filetype must be .jpg, .gif or .png"

I have the directory in place. /images/avatars (the default one)..and I believe the permissions are set correctly. Wouldn't it need 'Write' Access to that folder? Because it has to copy the image there...and also 'Read' so you can view the image as well.. duh.

I'm not sure what it could be.. and yes they are the correct file extenstions, and yes they are also within upload guidelines. 100x100px and 25kb. The image itself is only about 6.4kb..and it's a 96x96px image..

EDIT -- And Yes, the upload is enabled in the Admin panel.

What the hell is wrong with this thing?!
