Instant Messaging with ICQ Beta Test

Post by RansomedCaptive »

i can't remember to what extent this has been discussed before and i don't know if anyone really cares to know this or not. but long ago i signed up to be on the aol beta listserv, and i still get the emails. here's one i just got:

Subj: Instant Messaging with ICQ Beta Test
Date: 6/10/2003 5:22:45 PM Eastern Standard Time
From: WinBeta@AOL.COM
To: WINBETA@LISTSERV.AOL.COM
Reply-To: Othertests@AOL.COM
Sent from the Internet (Details)

Dear Testers:

The Beta Team is pleased to announce a new service that allows AOL and AIM
users to Instant Message with ICQ users!

As many of you know, ICQ ("I Seek You") is a very popular service that is
used by over 120 million users in more than 245 countries. Now it's possible for
AIM and AOL users to Instant Message with their friends on ICQ! Even if you
don't know anyone with an ICQ account, you can still participate in this test
by getting an ICQ number (they're free) and sending IMs from your AOL account
to your ICQ number on your own computer!

To get started, go to Keyword: Beta and click on the Instant Messaging with
ICQ link.

The AOL Beta Team

*** If you wish to be removed from this Listserv and the Beta Program, please
go to Keyword: BETA REMOVE. Thank You! ***

I used to part of the AOL Beta team as well.

About once a week, I had to download a complete new version of the AOL client for updates and bug fixes. (Why didn't AOL just have file patches ??)

But yeah, I used to Beta test for AOL 8  That was back when version 6 and 7 was still top of the line. :o

Yea, it never did work. My ICQ# was on my buddy list, and even when I was on ICQ, it never showed me as being signed on.

I've downloaded the New ICQ Lite - beta and it DOES work.

Problem is, only this version will be able to communitcate the AOL/AIM users. The only thing I didn't like is the fact you can not use their Nick name instead of UIN after adding them to AIM's buddy list. ICQ Lite works fine adding AIM/AOL buddy's screen name though.

So it only works with the crappy ICQ Lite? I use ICQ 2003 Pro--I hate the Lite version.

That both sucks and blows at the same time (if there is such a thing).
