Installing Windows
Ok, my friend just got a old computer with 95 on it, she had a new copy of 98 and wanted to put it on it, so she formated her drive. Where does she go next? Does she need a bootdisk? Did she formating ruin everything?

You need a Windows 98 Startup Disk (not a book disk). You can find the files on the Win98 CD-Rom. If you don't have a Windows 98 system to get the Startup Disk files from.. you can still run commands through DOS. I'm not sure of what those are though.
(The difference between the two is the Boot Disk only has your main DOS files, to give you access to your DOS commands (but are NOT provided on the Disk), whereas a Startup can literally allow you to start your computer from the diskette. It can also load all your drivers for you, such as your CD-Rom drivers to allow for CD installation)
The other option is hopefully your CD-Rom and CD-Rom Drive are bootable. Most new drives are.. as with the CDs.
If your CD boots from a restart, just follow the directions and isntall it that way.
Edit -- You can get a Startup Disk and/or Bootdisk from http://bootdisk.com

Well with a Startup Disk, it loads DOS temporarily into memory (I say that cause it gets wiped once you restart) ..and allows you the full array of DOS commands.xteq113 wrote:What commands?
Format, FDISK, etc.
Find all of those here: (as well as hidden ones books don't document)

Here's the startup disk files. Straight from my Windows 98 Startup Disk.
These files have saved my computer many a times..
Just download the Zip, and unpack it onto a Floppy disk. After that you're good to go.

and of course, after you get the startup disk al done, just pop it in, load up the comp, and when it asks, just select 'start with cdrom support'
then when you get the prompt - looks like this:
A:\
with a flashing cursor..... put the cd in the drive and just type in the following:
D:
[enter]
setup
[enter]
and its pretty much fly by from there
