game doesnt work..help

yesterday i borrowed my friend's Splinter Cell game for PS2. I was playing it and it worked fine, and then today i tried to play it and it kept freezing. It goes as far as the loading screen to get to the main menu and it just stays there forever. I think there might be one or 2 little scratches on the back..but I dont know if thats the problem because it worked yesterday. If it is cuz of the scratches does any1 know how to fix this?
