Do you SP1 installed for WinXP? There is supposedly a setting called 'Set Program Access and Defaults' which allows you to set the default messaging program. I don't have this to check.
Right now we are grasping at straws at what might be causing your problem.
Another site suggested to tweak the registry
Increase speed of Outlook Express when Messenger is removed or disabled
Google is my best friend
