IanCube,

Do you SP1 installed for WinXP? There is supposedly a setting called 'Set Program Access and Defaults' which allows you to set the default messaging program. I don't have this to check.

Right now we are grasping at straws at what might be causing your problem.

Another site suggested to tweak the registry
Increase speed of Outlook Express when Messenger is removed or disabled

I was having this same problem, I unchecked the Automatically Load AIM blah, blah, blah, and it would still load.

I just went into the AIM options, and unchecked Make AIM my default instant messenger, and now it doesn't load when I open Outlook Express.

If you don't have these options, maybe you should upgrade.
