What is the difference between an update and an upgrade?

Such as, why would AIM go from 5.2 to 6.0 rather than from 5.2 to 5.3?

this is wat i belive but im not certain:

update is getting a newer program that just has lil bug fixes from the previous version. 5.2 -> 5.3

upgrade is when you get a program that has basically been redone in some way. 5.0 -> 6.0

im guessing the number after the decimal changes when stuff has been ammended to the application or for bugfixes.
the number before the decimal would change when the application gains a new look or the source has been build in a different way.

There is the the main version, a major sub version and a minor sub version.

Pretty much the minor sub number is for tiny bug fixes. The major sub number is for larger bug fixes, or minor new features, and the main version number is for when a lot of features are added, but of course the person making the program would have to be asked, because their is nothing making them follow the set standard.
