BTW I forgot to mention there is a Pro version... Nothing IMO worth paying for (Even if I could figure out the price).
Winamp Pro

Why Pro?
In forthcoming versions of Winamp, new features are going to be optionally included which need to be paid for on a per copy basis. As Winamp gets a lot of downloads, it is not viable for Nullsoft to pay for this themselves.

What will I gain from getting Winamp Pro?
Currently you will be able to:
Encode MP3

Rip CDs at full speed

Burn CDs at full speed
Also, in the future other Pro features will be added, for which your Winamp Pro key will work. (Things like DVD Playback, hopefully )

What will I lose from sticking with regular Winamp?
Nothing!
Indeed, you will gain the ability to Rip and Burn CDs at slow speeds, as well as all the other new features in Winamp 5.

I already have a good free CD Ripper/Burner, do I have to have CD Ripping/Burning in Winamp?
No. In the installer, under Audio File Support you can uncheck what you don't want.

Why do I have to pay for MP3 encoding when it uses LAME which is free and open source?
Even though LAME is open source, Nullsoft has to pay per copy to Thompson for a licence to encode MP3. Thompson only offer MP3 encoding licences on a per-copy basis, so unfortunatly it has to be only included in the Pro version.

I paid for the shareware version of Winamp a while back before it went free, why do I have to pay again?
Because this is Winamp Pro. If you paid for the Winamp shareware you can still use Winamp, there is no pressure to upgrade.

Remember, it costs Nullsoft for every single Winamp Pro licence. If Nullsoft could do Winamp Pro for free, they would.

Winamp 2.92 and Winamp 2.95 had free, full speed CD Ripping, what gives?
They were leaked versions never intended for public consumption. This is the reason that they were illegal leaks.

I can't. I uninstalled it because the startup time to play an mp3 was too slow (like 3 or 5 sec). I'm prolly to use to winamp 2.91. It also took up 10mb. Not that 10mb is that big of a deal but it seems a little big for an mp3 player. That would be the only thing I would use it for. I will wait until another beta or 2 comes out before i try it again.

:( !!!1

u have to PAY for it (part of it...)

man, that blows, i like the old winamp when the entire thing is for free...

even if its only 4 those 3 things... i like getting the full 100% package when i d/l sumthin, and i dont want to pirate winamp cuz its very good...

sob..

i dont like "lite" versions....

see! this kinda bs happens when the lead programmer retires. the originals r always the best, this other dude is effing winamp up, just like that lamer that tried 2 bring bak xmen (xmen evolution) and the superfriends crap (green lantern ISNT SPOSE TO BE BLACK)

Just for Carl :)

Image

Basically, i only felt like taking ONE screenshot so I put the coolest feature that I saw in the screenshot......like baiscally u can have a 'theme' but switch the colors around (like default is blue/grey and some others are orange/silver (for this one theme...)). Also, that was scaled to 100%....I normally have it at 75% (not as intrusive). There are some other featurs, but that would involve posting more than one screenshot and do you REALLY think I'm that eager?

Geez guys... Your thinking too hard with your complaints...

First of all those 3 things that you have to pay for... Why in the world would you use Winamp to do that? Use Nero, or Easy CD creator, or whatever... Or you could use Winamp, for what I'm sure would cost you less then Nero, or Easy CD Creator.

Second, no one says the program has to be 10 MBs. You simply don't install any part of it that you not going to use.

Third if it is too slow (Which I fully understand), just don't use a free form skin. It works fine with any skin... This includes any old skin.

I looked at the install file... And I think I made a fine version for insomica... It doesn't have all the support for diffrent files (ogg, and such), but if your only going to use it for mp3s then you don't need that stuff. Also I took away standard file formats that Windows by default can play just fine. Took out the ability to support Modern skins, but like insomica said it's just too slow on his computer.... No visualization, but based on his complaint of speed, I highly doubt he uses them. Coming in at just over 3 MBs.... I guess at this point you could just use Winamp 2.9 and get the same features...... But I'm 99% sure with the same features as 2.9 version 5 trumps it, as is to be expected (better coding, blah, blah).

I'm going to have to explaine this a billion times over the next couple weeks I'm sure lol...

According to Nullsoft: 2+3 equals 5 (This version combines things from both versions engines)

It is however the "working name" which means they may change it by the time that it goes final.

I think 5 suits it. I mean, it incorporates both 2 and 3...and 2+3 equals 5....which is very clever in my opinion....
