How do you know when you have too much on your desktop?

Well how do you? Oh and how do you fix it?

I know when - I have 1.9 GBs of data on it...
I also know when it start creeping into my wallpaper's actual picture of Avril (Which I finally fixed so it doesn't say "Avril Lavigne" on it).

How do I fix it? I have a folder "keep" on my desktop... It is never opened but whatever... Anything that I want to keep goes there... Installers always get kept... Even more so when their out of date installers that I can't get online... Anything that is only two rows in gets deleted... Even if I want to keep it (Unless I can give my self a time when I will use it (exact time)).

The only things I keep on my desktop are my hard drive icons, removable disk icons, and networked drive icons. Occasionally I keep temporary items, such as URL location files, things I need to copy to CDR/FTP space, on the desktop as well, but they always get moved to my Home directory or deleted. I hate having a cluttered desktop.

My desktop is split into 4 rows. 2 rows of short cuts and what not on one side of the monitor then on the other side you have my folders and the computer icons

geez matt... that's quite overloaded.

I wouldn't keep much on the desktop unless its not a big deal if its lost... like shortcuts, etc. because I was told in my comp. hardware class that its safer to have it elsewhere on your computer in a spot that can easily be backed up, like the my documents.

I figured he already did. the second part wasn't aimed at matt. it was just a general statement.

I have a folder in My Documents called "Desktop". Every few weeks I clear my desktop into there. Most of the stuff I put on my desktop I don't intend to keep for a long time. (like when I save a screenshot for uploading somewhere or download sample code to look at)
