cache files

Post by searchingfortruth »

I lived with two roommates over the summer and thought that they were good friends and that I could trust them with my stuff. Recently one of them admitted to me that the other roommate stole a second screen name of mine w/o my permission. He said she did it using cache files. Could someone please explain (in simple terms bc i am computer illiterate) what exactly is was that she did or how she got it. Also any other advice that could be given about how to protect my computer from hackers or how to hack back would be greatly appreciated.

Thanx so much

he was bullshittin ya.

There is technically no way to steal a screen name using any type of cache files.

If you want to protect yourself from hackers, just do the simple stuff......

1) dont use the same password for every site and program
2) dont use a password that you can find in the dictionary
3) dont write them down, remember them
4) dont download weird programs that claim to give you 'a cool game' or something
5) dont go to porn sites..... they put all kinds of shit on your comp if your not careful
6) always click NO when something asks if you want to install and run an applet
7) blah..... im getting tired........ just do the common sense kinda thing and you should be fine

I saved the convo i had with him a couple of nights ago and this is what he told me. I took out names and screen names for obvious reasons. But apparently I said something to roommate #2 that upset her so she got mad and wanted to mess with my computer. I really don't remember saying to her what he told me i apparently said but even so that does not give her the right to go through my stuff on my computer with out my permission. But anyway this is how he told me she got the second name. Someone please explain to me what she did and if she got on my computer personally or did it with her computer. Keep in mind we were on a hub so access to each other's computers would not have been hard.

Thanks again and sorry for so much stuff to read just to answer a simple question

me: and i wanna know how u got my second sn
him: how I got your second screen name was from that day because I was on the floor and roommate #2 found the aim caches
me: she found what?
him: your aol caches
me: and how did she do this
him: there is a seperate cache for every screen name that has ever logged onto your computer
me: what like she hacked into my comp
him: it's in your windows folder
me: so she got it while she was on my computer
me: putting shit in there
him: no hacking, just looking. you can find it yourself. She was bored and changing settings to mess with you. Thats why she was on their. She saw the other cache and went "she has another sn"
him: yes, but not mutting shit in there
him: she never deleted, copied, or put anything on
him: just changed settings
me: she put stuff in my profile and away messages
him: was being annoying, not destructive

Yeah, if that's all that was done, that's actually something many of us do so that we can fit more text into our profiles, hehe...it's in the Windows directory for 98/ME/NT4, and in the documents and settings folder for 2000/XP/2003...here's where mine is- C:\Documents and Settings\JPB\Application Data\Aim\Jon8RFC\info.htm

Do people not have lives enough to try and hack a screen name? I mean honestly, that's the most immature thing ever.
