Where did my reply to Ryan go?
I was thank him for the new Reg file.
What is so wrong about that?

The new Reg file gives me the same message.

Sometimes the boards have trouble when the topic gets large enough to need a second page, and the post that would be the first post on the second page gets lost. I hadn't noticed this happening recently, but it just could be there haven't been a lot of newer topics that have needed a second page. We've tried to fix it by upgrading the forum software, but with no success :(.

"So what if they know your screen name? Everyone on your buddy list probably knows your screen name, as do a bunch I bet you don't know about."

I think by scren name, big-o means what's in this path:
C:\Windows\Profiles\Cookies\My Name
The name you registered your ISP (as well as local host) with is in the Cookies directory.

No, "screen name" means the name you use to logon to AIM with. Your Windows Logon name (the "My Name" thing you mentioned), and the "name you registered your ISP with", are not relevant.

In the latest version of AIM+, 2.2.1 build 65, released Monday, June 10, the debugging statistics code has been completely removed.

Spyware removal discussion

Post by wm5050 »

First of all, AIM+ software is excellent, and I appreciate all the hard work by Big-O-Software.

Truthfully, I felt disappointment when the "news" spread that AIM+ contained spyware and I was ready to unintstall the software despite the great features.

Thankfully, I came to the homepage to read the privacy policy and learned that the latest release no longer collects information, (even though the information that had been collected was harmless).

I thank Big-O for their honesty regarding the software.

I am now downloading the latest update.

Keep up the good work !

it's so dumb that people are spreading this "news" all around... they're just plain old usage statistics like any other application might send out. People are just trying to come up with a good story so they decided to try to discredit AIM+. It's dumb...

i find it interesting that people (not just on this forum, but, for instance, the dudes over at cnet.com) are getting upset about a downloaded program gathering usage statistics...i think i'd rather worry about the personal information about myself that i put online. gathering IP addresses is not hard...i implemented a commenting system (free) into my website that automatically stores the ip address of anyone who leaves a comment. i doubt that the big-o guys are trying to hack into your comptuer and get at you through AIM+.

Not to mention that microsoft is big on gathering user information these days, especially with the advent of WinXP...

First off, AIM+ is the best thing invented since porn. Secondly, If you wrote AIM+ wouldnt you want to know how many people are using your creation? I personally would. So try to not think of it as "spyware" because if finding out how many people are using something is spyware, almost every website is spyware due to counters.
Keep up the good work Big-O team.

Who cares about spyware? What can they possible noe about u by getting pings or stuff like that? I wouldnt mind at all. Besides we're already modding the AIM program it wouldnt hurt to do some more whack stuff. If BIg-O was to hurt u in anyway not that they would, they could just get some hackers to do it, not help you wit a program that you llike that hacks u.

Statistics Registry Fix Contents
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Big-O\AIM+]
@="C:\\Program Files\\AIM+"
"Statistics"=dword:00000000
for anyone not wishing to d/l another file, there is a simple way to edit this registry entry:

-click the windows "start" button
-choose "run" from the window
-in the "open" line, type "regedit", click ok
-in the regedit window:
--click the + next to "HKEY_CURRENT_USER" to exapnd the menu
--then click the + next to "Software"
--then click the + next to "Big-O"
--then click on "AIM+" to select it

now, on the right side, there should be a list of whats stored in the registry. to turn something OFF, you want a value of 0, to turn something ON, you want a value of 1 (this is binary values). so...

---double click "statistics" in the list to the right, and where it says 0 change it to 1 (if it says 00000001, change it to 00000000. again, this is binary.). the base should be hex.
---click ok, them close out of the regedit window.

congrats, youve just turned off the stats. 8)

word of warning...you can really mess up your comp while in regedit if you dont know what you are doing...BE SURE you know what you are turning on and off and don't do anything that you dont know will do...

if you want to change the configs, you can get Xteq's X-Setup. Also, (if you have win xp) you could get Microsoft's Tweak UI (its a part of the powertoy package). (the tweak ui does the same thing as microsoft...i only mentioned it if people only want to use 'microsoft' products for upgrading their comp (i can name at least 5 people who dont want to mess up their comp...) anyway, Xteq's setup is what you should use...it really gives you the options
