Need Help Recovering dial-up Connection Password In Win2k

Post by Chinchilla! »

I have a dial-up connection (account) on an older computer that I want to use on my new computer. Only problem is that I dont remember the password for it (its showing up as a bunch of *'s). I tried copying the .rnk file over, but that won't dial up the account, it says something about how its not a phonebook entry.

Keeping in mind I'm running windows 2000, how can I recover the password?

Call your ISP... Prove who you are and ask them to reset the password.

Is there a reason that's not an option?

If I remember correctly, Windows NT4 (which Windows 2000 is based on NT).. has a master password file called the SAM ? (i think)

You cant access it from within Windows though, otherwise it'll be all computer code crap.. I think you have to boot to some DOS thingy.. or maybe just go through the CMD or Command prompt.

I remember my teacher doing that before.. but we were using NT4 at school.. not 2000

I wonder if that AIM password recover thing would work. Don't know the name of it currently but I think you can find it on google fairly easy.

That is for windows account security information. That has absolutely nothing to do with any passwords or encrypted data dealing with programs or internet connections.

No... that is a completely different type of encryption and is a differently seeded algorithm...
